How does RemoteWire differ from a traditional VPN?
Traditional VPNs create a full-mesh tunnel to a central gateway, which becomes a bottleneck and a single point of failure. RemoteWire uses a distributed mesh topology where nodes communicate peer-to-peer through the nearest PoP, with no central choke point. This gives you lower latency, higher throughput, and eliminates the "gateway is down" class of incidents.
What happens if a PoP goes offline?
BFD (Bidirectional Forwarding Detection) monitors every link with sub-second granularity. If a PoP becomes unreachable, BGP withdraws that route and traffic is rerouted through the next-closest PoP automatically. In practice, the failover completes in under 50ms on Business plans and under 10ms on Enterprise plans — faster than most TCP retransmit timers.
Can I keep my existing IP addressing?
Yes. On Business and Enterprise plans you can bring your own private RFC 1918 address space and we'll advertise it within your mesh. You can also use our automatically assigned 10.42.0.0/10 space. For public IP addresses, Enterprise customers can bring their own BYOIP block which we'll announce from our ASN.
How does billing work — are there data transfer fees?
No. We charge a flat monthly fee per plan and never add per-GB data transfer fees within the RemoteWire fabric. Egress to the public internet from your nodes is charged at $0.02/GB, but intra-mesh traffic between your nodes is always free regardless of volume. This is a deliberate design choice — we think data egress fees are a tax on growing your architecture.
What encryption does RemoteWire use?
Data-plane tunnels use WireGuard with ChaCha20-Poly1305 authenticated encryption and Curve25519 for key exchange. The control plane uses mutual TLS 1.3. All keys are rotated automatically every 24 hours. We publish our cryptographic design document publicly and welcome external review.
Is there a free trial?
Yes — all plans start with a 14-day free trial with no credit card required. You get full Business-tier access during the trial including all 40+ PoPs, priority support, and the Terraform provider. After 14 days you choose a plan or your nodes are deactivated (your configuration is retained for 30 days).
